The other day I came across a phrase that didn't quite sit right with me..."future leaders". In my view, this is somewhat of an oxymoron.
I get where they're coming from. It's common within healthcare (especially in the public system) for the terms leader and manager to be used interchangeably. You work conscientiously to advance your career with the aspiration of eventually arriving in a leadership position. Is that what makes you a future leader? Or is that just ambition?
I believe leadership and management are separate things. Some managers are leaders, sure. But definitely not all of them. Just as some of those early in their career, with ambition to advance their career, are leaders right now. Not in the future, today.
This YouTube clip of an interview with Peter Senge (Author of The Fifth Discipline) explains this concept better than I can. Leadership doesn't have to be defined as an individualistic attribute connected to your role. It can be considered "the capacity of a human community to shape its future".
You don't have to work toward being a leader one day in the future, you can be one today. You lead by taking a step forward and making a contribution.
